Why this project matters
Home to sweeping west coast beaches, sheltered harbour shores and rare dune lake ecosystems, the Awhitu Peninsula is one of New Zealand's most distinctive landscapes.
Awhitu Landcare works alongside local communities, landowners and mana whenua to protect this special place through predator control, habitat regeneration and environmental stewardship.
With water surrounding much of the peninsula, coordinated predator pest plant control can help create a natural "land island", giving native wildlife the best chance to recover and thrive.
