Protecting the coastal treasures of Ōrere and Kawakawa Bay

From native bush to coastal wetlands, locals are working together to protect precious habitats and help native wildlife thrive along the eastern shores of the Hauraki Gulf.

Why this project matters

Stretching along the eastern shores of the Hauraki Gulf, and bordered by beautiful beaches, estuaries and native bush, the Orere and Kawakawa Bay communities are working together to protect one of our region's most treasured coastal landscapes.

From restoring waterways and wetlands to caring for nesting shorebirds such as the New Zealand dotterel, local volunteers are helping create healthier habitats where native wildlife can flourish alongside thriving communities.

Already have traps and bait stations?

We would love it if you could map them on Trap.NZ, and, even better, keep records of what you catch (Don’t worry, the exact locations are kept private, it just lets us know roughly where action is happening in the area).

How to map your traps and bait stations and keep records

1 – Register on Trap.nz
